Qantas has recently announced a multi-million dollar upgrade to the cabins on its Airbus A330 fleet. With major improvements to Economy seating, entertainment systems, technology connectivity and updated modern interiors, this upgrade reinforces Qantas’ commitment to enhancing the passenger experience. This refurbishment program is scheduled to commence in mid-2025 in their Brisbane maintenance facility with the first aircraft being completed by the end of the 2025 calendar year. The project is expected to be complete by the end of 2026.
As the A330 is a key part of Qantas’s international network, these upgrades mark a welcome improvement for travellers to destinations in Asia like Singapore, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. Additionally, Qantas' fleet renewal plan will roll out over the next decade and includes 12 Airbus A350 and 12 Boeing 787 aircraft to progressively replace its existing A330s.
Some of the major features of the A330 upgrade include an update to their Economy Seats. Qantas has equipped the A330 economy cabin with the same seats that will feature on its Project Sunrise A350s, optimised for comfort on long-haul routes. Passengers will enjoy advanced in-flight entertainment with 13.3” 4K OLED screens and an updated user interface, giving them access to a wide range of movies, TV shows, and games on a high-definition display. Economy passengers can now take advantage of USB-C fast charging and Bluetooth audio, allowing them to use their own headphones with ease.
After positive reviews from customers, the A330 Business Class suites with fully flat beds will remain and have been designed with quality materials to ensure restful sleep during long-haul flights. Unlike the previous generation’s fixed dividers, these feature adjustable privacy dividers with the option to raise or lower the screen based on their preferences enabling a more connected journey when travelling with a companion. Qantas travellers can now look forward to international Wi-Fi on the A330 fleet, as the airline launches high-speed, complimentary internet access for select Asia routes beginning this December. Passengers on Wi-Fi-enabled aircraft are already connecting over Australia en route to destinations like Hong Kong, Delhi, and Bengaluru, enhancing their in-flight experience with seamless connectivity. This upgrade will align internet speeds with Qantas Domestic flights, where the speed and reliability of inflight Wi-Fi have led to an average usage rate of 75 percent, with some routes reaching up to 100 percent uptake.
Qantas’ A330 upgrades showcase its dedication to enhancing the passenger experience. Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace expressed this commitment, saying, “We’ve used our fleet renewal program to completely rethink the inflight experience, and these cabin upgrades mean we can bring next-generation features and designs to our existing aircraft.”
