The fare can include domestic flights in Australia on Qantas to get you to Sydney to meet the AA flight to LA and then up to 4 internal flight sectors within the USA or to Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean. This can even be used for a Hawaii stop inbound to Australia. 4 sectors not enough? Additional sectors can be added for just $80 + taxes in economy or $160+ taxes in business class, racking up extra status credits as you go with longer sectors accruing greater status credits.
